Ecological efficiency of production and the ecological footprint of organic agriculture
Matja? Turinek B.Sc., Young researcher,Maja Turinek,Silva Grobelnik Mlakar M.Sc., Senior Lecturer,Franc Bavec Ph.D., Full Professor
Journal for Geography , 2010,
Abstract: The rising energy prices and climatic changes have intensified the search for alternative farming systems where energy consumption per unit would be lowered. A long-term field trial, started in 2007 at the University of Maribor, focuses on food quality and the ecological footprint of onventional (CON), integrated (INT), organic (ORG) and biodynamic (BD) farming systems. The gained data has been evaluated and interpreted using the SPIonExcel tool. Results from the first year show better environmental performance of both, ORG and BD systems in production of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and spelt (Triticum spelta L.), mainlydue to the non-use of external synthetic production factors. When yields are added to the equation, the ORG and BD systems emerge also as more efficient per unit of land area. Thus, the ORG and BD farming systems present viable alternatives for reducing the impact ofagriculture on climate change, while ensuring a more sustainable food security.
Durkheim’s Sociological Analysis of Suicide  [PDF]
Steven Gerardi, Ph.D
Sociology Mind (SM) , 2020, DOI: 10.4236/sm.2020.102007
Abstract: This effort will suggest that Durkheim argued that suicide is a function of the levels of Social Integration into the Conscience Collective of the social group. Consistent with his hypothesis, Durkheim identified four forms of suicide and their related levels (high/low) of social integration affecting the personal act of suicide. Lastly, this effort is not a traditional research project, as was mentioned above; rather is reevaluation of a classical sociological theory.
Compression Properties of Polyester Needlepunched Fabric
Sanjoy Debnath, Ph.D.,M. Madhusoothanan, Ph.D.
Journal of Engineered Fibers and Fabrics , 2009,
Abstract: In the present paper, a study of the effects of fabricweight, fiber cross-sectional shapes (round, hollowand trilobal) and presence of reinforcing materialon the compression properties (initial thickness, percentage compression, percentage thickness lossand percentage compression resilience) of polyesterneedle punched industrial nonwoven fabrics ispresented. It was found that for fabrics with noreinforcing material, the initial thickness, compression, and thickness loss were higher thanfabrics with reinforcing material, irrespectiveoffiber cross-section. Compression resilience datashowed the reverse trend. Initial thickness fortrilobal cross-sectional fabric sample was highestfollowed by round and hollow cross-sectionedpolyester needle punched fabrics. The polyesterfabric made from hollow cross-sectioned fibersshowed the least percentage compression at everylevel of fabric weights. The trilobal cross-sectionedpolyester fabric sample showed higher thicknessloss followed by round and hollow cross-sectionedpolyester fabric samples respectively. The hollowcross-sectioned polyester fabric samples showedmaximum compression resilience followed byround and trilobal cross-sectioned polyestersamples irrespective of fabric weights. The initialthickness increases, but percentage compression, thickness loss and compression resilience decreaseswith the increase in fabric weight irrespective offiber cross-sectional shapes.
Organizational Careers: A forward theory
Barney G. Glaser, Ph.D., Hon. Ph.D.
Grounded Theory Review : an International Journal , 2010,
Abstract: In general, organizations obtain work from people by offering them some kind of career within their structures. The operation of organizations, therefore, depends on people’s assuming a career orientation toward them. To generate this orientation, organizations distribute rewards, working conditions, and prestige to their members according to career level; thus these benefits are properties of the organizational career. To advance in this career is to receive more or better of all or some of these benefits. Generally speaking, therefore, people work to advance their organizational careers. But also, generally speaking, people do not like to talk about their careers or to be asked about them in everyday conversations with many or unknown people. In this sense, a person’s own organizational career is a sensitive or “taboo topic.” Discussions with others about one’s career occur only under the most private, discreet conditions. As a result, while people may talk abstractly and generally about careers, these discussions are typically based on a combination of the little they know of their own career and much speculation. They often have very little particular or general knowledge based on actual careers. These observations apply also to a large sector or the sociological community, as indicated by a brief perusal of the table of contents of sociological monographs and readers on organizations. The topic of careers is seldom discussed and almost never concertedly focused upon.
Yarn Strength Modelling Using Fuzzy Expert System
Abhijit Majumdar, Ph.D.,Anindya Ghosh, Ph.D.
Journal of Engineered Fibers and Fabrics , 2008,
Abstract: Yarn strength modelling and prediction has remained as the cynosure of research for the textile engineers although the investigation in this domain was first reported around one century ago. Several mathematical, statistical and empirical models have been developed in the past only to yield limited success in terms of prediction accuracy and general applicability. In recent years, soft computing tools like artificial neural networks and neural-fuzzy models have been developed, which have shown remarkable prediction accuracy. However, artificial neural network and neural-fuzzy models are trained using enormous amount of noise free input-output data, which are difficult to collect from the spinning industries. In contrast, fuzzy logic based models could be developed by using the experience of the spinner only and it gives good understanding about the roles played by various inputs on the outputs. This paper deals with the modelling of ring spun cotton yarn strength using a simple fuzzy expert system. The prediction accuracy of the model was found to be very encouraging.
The Local-Cosmopolitan Scientist
Barney G. Glaser, Ph.D., Hon. Ph.D.
Grounded Theory Review : an International Journal , 2011,
Abstract: In contrast to previous discussions in the literature treating cosmopolitan and local as two distinct groups of scientists, this paperi demonstrates the notion of cosmopolitan and local as a dual orientation of highly motivated scientists. This dual orientation is derived from institutional motivation, which is a determinant of both high quality basic research and accomplishment of non-research organizational activities. The dual orientation arises in a context of similarity of the institutional goal of science with the goal of the organization; the distinction between groups of locals and cosmopolitans derives from a conflict between two goals.
Blocking Conceptualization
Barney G. Glaser, Ph.D., Hon. Ph.D.
Grounded Theory Review : an International Journal , 2011,
Abstract: My purpose in this chapter is to go into some detail on the various blocks to conceptualization that the reader can and should be wary of so he/she can either avoid them, deal with them adequately to do a GT study, or submit to them humbly for greater gains for the moment. They are authoritative blocks, preconceptions, inability to adequately conceptualize, the initial confusion and regression, multiversion view of GT, QDA requirement blocks, data collection overload, data coding overload, peer reviews, dealing with jargonizing GT, and being a novice both in experience and in scholarship with GT. Obviously these are related in many ways and I have dealt with them a bit in above chapters on helping coding. My goal here is to put them into relief for focused attention and thought so they can be avoided or handled.
Technology-Integrated Project-Based Approach in Science Education: A Qualitative Study of In-Service Teachers’ Learning Experiences
Kakali Bhattacharya, Ph.D.,Sumita Bhattacharyya, Ph.D.
- , 2009,
Abstract: This qualitative study examines the impact of a technology-integrated project-based approach (PBA) on the learning experiences and subsequent decision-making of inservice teachers pursuing their master’s degree who are enrolled in a science methods class. The authors employed in-depth interviews, journal reflections, observations, performance in class projects, and content of class projects as data sources. Through inductive data analysis the authors found that banter is a key factor in collaborative learning, that technology-integrated PBA fostered interdisciplinary connections in the science methods class, and that in-service elementary education teachers intended to integrate technology and PBA in their science classes as a result of their learning experiences in the science methods class

Henryk Kowgier, Ph.D.
Folia Oeconomica Stetinensia , 2007, DOI: 10.2478/v10031-007-0003-6
Abstract: In the paper a method is found for estimating approximate optimum points on efficient portfolios curve (risk-profit) that are connected with exponential utility functions being very frequently preferred in practice by investors.
Business Demography - the Analysis of Firm Population in the Zachodniopomorskie Voivodship as Compared to the Polish and European Market
Iwona Markowicz, Ph.D.
Folia Oeconomica Stetinensia , 2007, DOI: 10.2478/v10031-007-0002-7
Abstract: Business demography is a new developing field of research. Problems in scientific research occur due to methodological inaccuracies. Differences in defining terms and indicators, and differences and changes in business registration standards make it difficult to analyse data in time or to conduct a comparative study of various countries. Many problems still remain to be solved; however, there is a need to study the population of firms and to analyse processes occurring in these populations. This article shows the data on birth rates and death rates of European business entities registered by the Eurostat. It also presents firm set-up indicators and firm liquidation indicators in the Zachodniopomorskie voivodship as compared to the Polish market.
